Weekend Trippin Tour #1 : VA & NC

This was the first of a few trips we have planned this season to different parts of the country!

The crew: AJ Kohn, Greg Pachell, Shannon Sexton and new addition to the official team Mike Thomas. Mike brings a classic straight forward style to the group, is a good all around skater and has great popping ability as well as being one of the nicest guys you will meet.

This trip was a great way to start the season as we had great weather, small crew and our friend Kellie had a beach house in NC that we could crash at for as long as was needed! Good looking out Kellie much appreciated!Greg and Mike got in a lot of filming this trip as both where totally ripping it up every spot we hit. Shannon and I got in some good lines but didn't really feel like filming this trip and our new rider / longtime friend Mike was on a mission as well as Greg so we just let them do it up!

Parks hit up:
Anti Gravity Newport News VA: 1st stop of the tour, really fun to skate, cool vibe and a lot of shredding went down here!Got to meet and skate with a bunch of new skaters / taught some tricks, played a few games of SKATE and sessioned with the locals who where all ripping well beyond their years. A big thanks to Bob and Randy for having us, we will definitely be back!

YMCA Outer Banks NC: If you are into a never ending bowl this spot is for you, the street course was fun but needs an update, we taught free lessons up there from 10-3 for the YMCA Healthy Kid Festival. Thanks again to everyone at the YMCA for all your hospitality!

Kill Devil Hills Skate Park NC: Right up the road from the YMCA, brand new and smooth it is considered a "Flow" park meaning a bowl with banked hips and rollers in the middle with street obstacles / interesting features along the perimeter. Definitely a fun park, the young locals didn't know what to make of us at first but once we got in a line or two the warmed right up and a great session was on!

158 Skate Shops mini Ramp: Small but a lot of fun with concrete coping on one side, metal on the other and a vert wall that goes to the ceiling. When we got there the session was heating up and everyone was throwing down on it! Good times for sure! One of the locals Forrest Davis stood out to us with his switch skating and smooth lanky style although everyone was killing it that day, it is amazing what can go down on a mini! The cats at 158 are really cool and holding it down for the kids as one of the only core shops still in existence in that area. If you are in the area definitely stop by and get in a session on the mini. Big thanks to Mike / Billy of 158 and to Jesse for the back yard pool session offer(next time for sure!) and all the skaters who came out and had fun with us!

Another NC Park: All I remember of this park is that it had a really nice bowl (although really tight) and a laid out bowl with a Clam Shell / banked hips with a lot of flat bottom other then that it had a small street area that you will see in the video Mike ollieing up the step Euro to crooks on the ledge and a bunch of other things up and down it. It is not far from Kills Devils and you may see some of the VA Beach Fork Crew (bowl rippers) or even a smooth cat like VA based Pro Julian Etheridge who was steezing up the park with lofty airs, smooth slides and grinds.

Mt. Trashmore Virginia Beach VA: This was our last stop and we where all pretty wrecked when we got there but still managed to get in a few good lines. Not much to say really, the bowl is always fun the course has a little of everything and we ran into some cool guys there but that day there was a lot of bikes as well as a lot of younger kids who don't have there awareness yet in a park so it was a little bit eehh but still fun regardless.

Just found this footage from the Under the Bridge premiere at FDR last summer! With it being winter and snowing and all all over the North East and Mid Atlantic regions a little touch of summer chocked full of gnar I think is in order!
Our very own Greg Pachell was on hand for this event and you can see him shredding in the beginning and towards the end of this video. PS: He is the one with red hair! :)

Formation "Custom Crusier" Art Show

TM: Shannon getting work done!

Our tour TM and womens rider Shannon Sexton as many of you know is also an accomplished snowboarder and this past weekend placed 4th in the Slop Style event at Big Boulder in the Womens division.

Starting off the season

I know this post is a little late but it has been a busy few weeks here at One Skateboard Co as we did the trade shows again to start off 2010!

Surf Expo: 10 x 20 booth-shared with Formation Skateboard Company

This past Surf Expo was a little slower then in years past but was a good opportunity to talk to old friends and make some new ones! We hope to get into a few more good shops this season and continue to develop our program and what we can offer the the skateboarding public. With that said we are officially working with Formation Skateboards who bring in original art, limited editions and real paint on decks! Needless to say we a stoked to be representing Formation as well as One Skateboards and Performance Tip Skateboards!

Crossroads: San Diego
A great turn out and event, really reminded me of trade shows of the past with emphasis on skateboarding and with the sun shinning there was plenty of that throughout the 2 days of shows! I was psyched to see so many East Coast heads out on the West all doing there thing and well! Having the east coast guys out there definitely was a breath of fresh air to what would be a "brodeo" definitely a bit of that vibe going on but it was in check for the most part. Concrete Wave and PSK8 Flew me out to demo and get people psyched on skating (no problem there!) as well as talk to some international groups and gave out about $1,500 worth of product to get people and shops on the new P-Tip Decks to see that they are not a gimmick and that they really work, so far everyone is stoked! A very busy Concrete Wave booth for those 2 days and good times had by all!

2010 Surf Expo Edit

Another Expo in the books! Although it seemed a bit slower this year we got work done regardless and every year we have stepped it up, now just following up and hopefully the shops that came on through will step it up as well with some orders!
(Fingers crossed!)
This year our crew was cut in almost half, Matt Henry went on a "walkabout" and was MIA for months then called right before Expo but couldn't make it, Joey had to take care of some things back in MD, Shannon is currently instructing snowboard camps but we did bring a few new people on tour and had a great time!
Greg as you can see got wrecked on the 3rd day we where there and ended up in a wheelchair no worries just a sprained foot, but did get some great footage!
Brian brought his good buddy Tore who was great having on tour are he helped build the booth/wheeled Greg around, threw down some killer lines and of course got in some great shenanigans. Brian threw down as we know he could both in skating and filming!
JJ O Donnell was MIA for awhile busy with work but as you can see he still got it as well as destroyed all of us in the game of pool! He has been playing the pool circuit again so if he asks you to play just say no!
Lorenzo Errico and Ben Butler from Formation joined us this year as we have partnered up and working together, stepping it up in a 10x20! They where great to have in the booth and the fact Lorenzo is from Italy came in handy as we are meeting with an Italian distributor due to the show!
All in all a great time with a bunch of great guys skating, can't ask for more!

Once and for all lets put this to rest

We have been receiving a variety of emails lately for some reason in regards to the article "Troubles of shooting a killer ad" which is strange as we posted this a while ago.I would email these individuals however none left there information or used a real name. Lets get a few facts clear and bury this once and for all.

1)We did have consent from several key-holders who where also present during the shoot.
2)The photographer of the photo was an hour late as we where meeting there and then going to FDR, by that time it started raining so he other key holders suggested we shoot it there as he didn't have time to shoot it again that week.
2)We did donate money to the warehouse as well as left drinks etc.
3)We where 86ed by Scott without him even asking for an explanation he just left a nasty message and it was pretty clear he didn't want to hear our side of the story.He only found out after the Ad published, that's when he got pissed, but by then it was already done. In retrospect we should have asked him anyway but we where assured it was cool as long as nothing happened to the ramp and we where respectful and we where.
4)As for an apology, we are sorry that this all turned out the way it did it seems like a lot of people are bent out of shape for no real good reason other then we didn't go through the proper channels which we thought the people who let us in and assured us it was cool where. That was our mistake, and we have taken the blame for all of it although others who still skate there where involved but no need getting them banned to, just make the rules clearer to everyone who has access to the warehouse and problem solved.

So I guess the moral of this is instead of harboring ill will toward anyone just ask them what went down instead of assuming. We meant no disrespect and if we could do it all over we would have gone ahead and asked Scott instead of listening to people who he entrusted with keys to the warehouse. But that's a catch 22 as well because they are helping pay the rent there so some may take more liberties as they think they are entitled to but that's another issue that the "warehouse" guys need to sort amongst themselves. Have a great holiday season fellas and if you got an issue with us ever be adult enough to give me a call or send an email: Nims, Orso and Scott all have my information so feel free to step up and be heard.

NC / VA Gnarhammered Trip

Starts off basic enough, head down to Eastern Skate Supply to drop off new decks then head back right?! Well 9 hrs in the car your legs start getting stiff and when you arrive at Eastern your surrounded by skateboards and skateboarding so we did what any of you would have, called off of work canceled the weekend plans and made a road trip out of it! The first day it was Greg and I, however Mike Thomas head we where skating and called to see if he could meet us, we where like sure more the better! So Mike his brother and even Father all did what we did and met Greg and I in Nags Head. we celebrated into the we hours of the night and woke up and started our work up the coast! Here is an edit from that really fun trip! We suggest that you all do the same, call of work, cancel your plans and go on a road trip with some friends before it gets to cold! Enjoy!

World Championships of Freestyle Results

We are back from an awesome trip to Japan!

So many things happened and many new friends we met during our week stay in Tokyo!
It was the best contest that I had ever seen in Freestyle since the new movement began in 2000!
The organization and scheduling was fantastic and the setting could not have been more perfect right in the middle of one of the most popular and busy malls in Tokyo so we had huge crowds (10,000+ throughout the weekend) every event on 3 sides on the bottom floor and 4 sides (escalators behind the judges area) upstairs. When you got out onto the floor everyone was cheering after the announcement and when you landed a trick everyone went crazy it was like how it is supposed to be like those huge contests back in the 80`s.
The Japanese skaters where not only amazing skaters but really friendly and kind, most of them already knew who all of us where and after the first day of skating all of the foreign skaters had a bunch of new friends and fans they embraced us like we where family. Many thanks to Murasaki Sports for being the headline sponsor along with the many other sponsors of the event, it will be an event I will always remember and I can`t wait to come back here (Japan).

World Freestyle Championships Tokyo

The competition field is intense as 20 Top Pro, 25 Top Ams and 6 Top Girl Freestyle Skateboarders from around the world will be competing at this event in the center of Tokyo for two days and about $5,000 USD in cash / prizes and World Champion of Freestyle title.

Troubles of shooting a killer AD

Well just got a message today from a very "irate" person in regards to our new Ad in FTK featuring Greg Pachell and apparently we are all(One Skateboard Co) 86ed for life from this location because of the Ad.

For all those wondering is that Photo shop or is that real flames oh they are real and skillfully controlled with a technique we can't discuss because that's the last thing we need is people amateurishly trying to imitate what we did at this location.

Please note that there is a fire extinguisher at arms length (look behind the deck) and we didn't burn anything that would spark out or "pop" due to the fact it is a wooden bowl.

There is actually a science behind what we do, we aren't some yahoos who did this on a whim, even though the angry caller thought otherwise. Plus we wanted to make sure nothing happened to the bowl as a lot of guys utilize that bowl as there only place to skate during the week and in colder weather, that was something we didn't want on our conscience so the utmost care was involved.

Most people can grasp what we did here as every reaction that we heard from everyone so far was "Wow" "That's sick!" "you guys never cease to amaze me" "Where is that bowl?" etc.
Being a professional skateboard company that is our job, to keep skaters psyched and create images (video/photo) to make you want to go skate and get creative! You would think a place like this warehouse that is built for and by skaters could understand this and most of them do but some (particularly one) does not.
Maybe we one uped them or did it before they could do it who knows, the fact is we where let by key holders, fully knowing what we where going to do and they also supervised to make sure nothing went wrong. So whats the problem? If that doesn't spell permission what does?!

Preferably we would have shot this at FDR, but as fate had it, we had a deadline and it rained and this was made available to us, so we did it up respectfully and in under 12 frames!

So we got 86ed for life for skateboarding at this warehouse,hey whatever will be will be right?!

We appologize for any inconvenience or pissing anyone off and we take full responsibility for our actions and of the various others involved. So let it be a lesson to all of you reading this sometime when you shoot a killer Ad there are consequences, are they worth it? You decide!

Bordz PA Demo / 1 yr. Anniversary

Our good friends at Bordz PA invited us to be apart of their 1 yr. Anniversary Bash!
Greg and AJ where on hand to help out with the events (Game of SKATE, Mini Ramp Jam, Wall ride bash) and skate with everyone. The event originally was to be held at the Warminster Park but due to early rain it was moved to the Bordz Skate Shop and mini park, the sky cleared up and the portable park was brought outside for two different styles of parks. There was 3 bands and 1 DJ (DJ EVil B, who was solid all day!) that played including this new band called Glorg, definitely check them out! A great turn out(50-60 kids) and a lot of fun, can't ask for more then that!
Our friend Ryan from Sabotage Productions was also on hand and put together a little composite of the day! Check it out! Support your local skate shop!

The World Championships of Freestyle Skateboarding are happening in Tokyo this October and one of our resident Freestlyle aces, AJ Kohn will be heading over there to show them how we do it in Philly!
" I haven't been to a World Championship since 2001 and I was an Amateur at the time! I can't think of a better place to make my Pro debut at the World Championships then in Japan, home of some of the best and most progressive freestyler's in the world! It should be fun!" AJ

Legends Never Die!

Those where the words of a legend Harold Hunter, that had passed a few years ago. Although they are no longer physically here, what they did and what they meant to the people around them and the scenes they where apart of will never be forgotten!

I was sad to here of the untimely passing of JR Neeves and Eric Ruwadi earlier this summer and now NYC and East Coast legend Andy Kessler all in the same summer.

Well I hope where they all are now it is always summer and the sessions last forever!

Joey "Flips"patrick 3rd in Baltimore

Our own Joey Fitzpatrick recently participated in the 2nd biggest Game of Skate ever (354 people)which took 4 hours but he finished a respectable 3rd place.
As you can see from the picture Joey is the most stoked out of all of them (and the only one representing his board sponsor rocking the One DMC T, good looking out Joey!) and probably the sweatiest as well as that day was well into the 90's!

Our First AD!

Our good friends at FTK Magazine (www.ftkmag.com) have always been supportive of what we are trying to do here at One Skateboard Co as well as support the many grass root efforts and smaller companies coming up in our industry. So when the time came to start doing some Ads they where first on our list!

The new issue is on their site, you can page through it and see the new AD as well as deck preview of our new line! Needless to say we are excited to be apart of FTK and look forward to working with them more in the future!
